Consumer interest in the Honda Accord has increased substantially as Toyota continues to be investigated for safety concerns. Cars.com announced this week that consumer interest in new Toyota vehicles, which previously was the highest, has fallen significantly. In the case of the Toyota Camry, which has long owned the number one spot in consumer interest by a wide margin, has now fallen to fifth place. Honda Accord has benefited the most from Toyota’s woes as it now has the most consumer interest in the midsize sedan market, followed by Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and then the one time king, Toyota Camry.
Cars.com editor Patrick Olsen said the “constant government and media scrutiny of safety issues” among the wide ranging recalls by Toyota has had definite impact on the make of vehicles consumers are considering. The only question is how much more damage will be done before the Toyota issues are put behind them, and more importantly how long the effects of the recalls will linger.
The Toyota woes have also had the same effect on consumer interest in the compact car market as well as the full size pickup truck market.
While it is unfortunate for Toyota, it is nice to see the boost that Honda Accord will likely get, as the boost in consumer interest translates into a boost in sales and production of the already popular Honda Accord.
