Honda Accord Airbag Recall Crushes Takata Shares
Takata Corp. shares fell the most in almost three weeks in Tokyo trading after Honda Motor Co. recalled Honda Accord and Civics because of defects in air bags made by the Japanese auto-parts maker.
The shares fell 5.9 percent to close at 1,599 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the most since July 13. The stock fell as much as 8.5 percent following the recall announcement yesterday.
Takata spokesman Kimio Kobori said the Tokyo-based company supplied the air bags for 2001 Honda Civics and Honda Accords. About 285,000 units of the models have been recalled in the U.S., Honda spokeswoman Yasuko Matsuura said.
- 2002 Honda Accord models have also now been recalled.
As previously reported, the airbag defect resulted in one death in the U.S., Japan’s transport ministry said yesterday.
Takata, the world’s biggest maker of auto safety equipment, said the air bags it supplies to other carmakers are manufactured differently and do not suffer from the same problem.
More Honda Accord Airbag Recalls
Honda Motor Co. announced Friday it widened its previous airbag recall to add 440,000 cars that could have a lethal airbag defect. Affected models include the 2001-2002 Honda Accord, as well as the 2001 Civic and 2002-2003 Acura TL.
The defect has caused 6 known injuries and one known death in the United States, Honda spokesman Chris Naughton states.
The driver’s side steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator needs to be replaced on all affected Honda Accords and Civics.
In some cars, the airbag inflators may over-pressurize the inflator mechanism as the airbag is deploying, which could cause the inflator casing to rupture, according to Honda. As a result the carmaker said, “Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants.”
Registered owners of the will receive a recall notice in the mail in the next few months to schedule a repair. Honda said the owners of cars most likely to have a problem will be contacted first.
Honda Accord and civic owners can log onto the Web site www.owners.honda.com/recalls and click on the “Owner Link” to get a status of their recall.

Do the Right Thing with Cash For Clunkers
Buy a new Honda Accord with the Cash For Clunkers Program
Thanks to the Obama Administation Cash For Clunkers program, now is the time to buy a new Honda Accord! If you’ve been considering selling your gas guzzling SUV or other older vehicle, take advantage of up to $4500 trade in to buy a more fuel efficient Honda Accord.
It’s a win-win-win-win-win situation! Why you ask?
For starters, you dump that gas guzzling SUV. That saves you a ton of money on gas every week, and helps reduce gas consumption overall, which reduces oil consumption, which reduces America’s reliance on foreign oil! I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea!
Second, you get up to $4,500 rebate on the purchase of your new fuel efficient Honda Accord. That’s over and above any other rebates or incentives currently offered on the Honda Accord. Add that to the fact that dealers are already slashing prices in an effort to reduce their sky high inventories, and you can just imagine how much you are going to save on that shiny new Honda Accord.
Third, you save lots of money on fuel, and maintenance on that shiny new Honda Accord. That’s extra money in your pocket every week/month to help pay your car or house down faster!
Fourth, imagine thousand or tens of thousands of others also taking advantage of the Cash For Clunkers program to buy a new Honda Accord. This could have the potential to have a significant impact on your oil consumption, which ultimately will reduce our reliance on foreign oil, which should reduce the cost of gasoline going forward!
Fifth, and lastly (I promise), all these new car purchases will help improve sales at all the major car manufacturers, hopefully, shoring up the financial woes of General Motors, Chrysler and Ford!
So, if you take advantage of the Cash For Clunkers Program, you are improving not only your own financial situation, but also improving the American economy, reducing oil dependency, and bailing out the auto makers. So get out to your local dealer and buy that new Honda Accord you’ve been dreaming about, or maybe the new Honda CRZ, in the remote chance that it comes out before this program expires.

With one of the most fuel-efficient vehicle lineups in the industry, nearly every new Honda model will help customers qualify for a federal “Cash for Clunkers” credit, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. Depending on the trade-in vehicle, customers will be able to choose one or more of Honda’s diverse model line including the Ridgeline pickup, its most-rugged vehicle; the Accord, Honda’s best-selling U.S. model; and the all-new Insight, the most-affordable hybrid in the United States.
“You don’t really need a complicated chart to find a qualifying vehicle at a Honda dealer,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We hope that this program will help consumers make the move into vehicles that are easier on both their wallets and the environment.”
The federal Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 was enacted on June 24 of this year. More commonly referred to as “Cash for Clunkers,” this program is designed to stimulate vehicle sales and reduce overall fuel use by providing up to a $4,500 credit to consumers who trade in their current eligible vehicle for one that achieves greater fuel economy.
The only vehicles in the Honda lineup that will not qualify for a credit are the limited-production S2000 roadster, the Accord V6 Coupe with manual transmission and the FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle (the latter is excluded by the program’s five year lease requirement). Honda cars that have a combined EPA fuel-economy rating of 22 MPG or more and may be eligible for payments under this program include:

2001 Honda Accord Recall – Airbag inflator
Honda has issued a recall for Accord and Civic models from the 2001 model year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall is due to the inflator for the driver’s airbag, which could produce excessive internal pressure when deployed.
This could cause the inflator to rupture, sending metal shards through the airbag cushion and potentially harming the vehicle’s occupants.
Dealers will replace the airbag inflator for free. Owners may contact Honda at 800-999-1009 or the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
